I’ve been having intense exchanges recently with my Trump-voting brothers. Hey, sis, I thought of you today — Here’s a new chant — We want Donald!
I’m dismayed to say that despite knowing better, both of my brothers drank the Kool-Aid and voted for the man promising to be the worst president in the history of our country. Neither of them can understand why their sister would be outraged, disturbed, upset or otherwise emotionally affected by their continual decision to stand by their man, no matter what he and his billionaire brethren do.
We were all raised Democrats. Our French immigrant father was a working-class machinist pulling in $250 a week. We grew up in apartments, drove beater Rivieras and Monte Carlos, dined at restaurants maybe like, once a year. We never once believed in the Republican agenda of massive tax cuts, everyone’s one their own and get those that are different from us out of our country, for God’s sake! We put our heads down, worked at meager jobs, tried to keep up and get ahead in our own ways, despite the odds against us.
But something happened along the way. Like many of the men (and women, who believe they should dishonor themselves by voting for someone lower than the lowest reptile) supporting Tweety and his compatriots, they fell out of step with progress. Opportunities slipped through their fingers like quicksilver, divorce and other hardships visited their lives, as it often does with the rest of us. But somehow, they took the easier road of thinking less and blaming more, rather than get in touch with the heart of the matter.
Jesus and every other religious figures knows that personal pain and growth are deeply personal matters. The process evolves in due time when we are ready. And some of us may never be.
Still in all, I share this missive for them — and for any of those like them — who may not understand, appreciate, or feel genuinely confused by the upset of the Sisterhood in this our New Age of Darkness and Times of Transformation. It’s also for the minds not yet formed or undecided in the upcoming Midterm Elections, for the doubtful and the genuinely downhearted. I wish I could say it may speak to the hearts and minds of my two otherwise Democratically-raised brothers, but that’s another story for another time…
Every brother, father, husband, lover, uncle, cousin or friend who voted for, supports or cheers on our current illegitimate occupier of the White House —
is betraying his sister, aunt, mother, lover, girlfriend, friend.
Yes, every one of you.
When he disrespects women, dishonors their marriage or their sovereignty, he disrespects us. By your support and your silence or a simple shrug of the shoulders, you disrespect us.
Every dismissal of his outrageous, immoral, ignorant, selfish, discriminatory, narcissistic or belligerent behavior, condones his acts. What you say to us: It’s okay he treats you or your fellow sisters that way, Sis. It’s okay he destroys peoples’ lives, tears families apart, strips away more resources from the already struggling. It’s okay to throw those who weren’t born here out of this country on mere technicalities. It’s okay he’s destroying the middle class, building up his bank accounts, playing footsies in bed with Putin. The important thing here is Hillary’s e-mails…
Every defense of his offense, every dismissal or invalidation, shocks us. By your support, your silence or shrug of the shoulders, you offend, dismiss and invalidate us.
Every move to erode our equality, intrude on our personal bodies, alarms us. By your support, your silence or shrug of the shoulders, you join him and his compatriots in such levels of permissiveness.
Every hurtful act or vulgar word informs his insecurities. Every outburst, every move, every decision, alerts us. We are moved to act, to protect, to defend — ourselves and all of what and who we love — every cliff, every river, every pond, lake and stream, every ocean, every coastline, every dog, every wolf or sea lion, every bird, every cat. Every living thing.
Every move to dismantle our protections for clean air or clean water put in place to control the appetites of big business, disregards our love and value of all things beautiful, all things healthy and all things fair. By your support, your silence or shrug of the shoulders, you join him in this.
Women are the givers of life, the nurturers, the creators. Feminine energy is light and life.
Every move he makes to destroy what Mother Nature created — shakes us in our very core.
Every shout, every applaud, every jeer says to us — Go ahead, destroy more.
The details of his and his billionaire brethren’s darkness are as irrelevant as any act of hate, violence, prejudice or destruction. They are what disturbs us, what drains us, what brings sadness, hatred, confusion and anger into life itself.
Every tweet, every Executive Order, every speech, every act, you ignore or join him in, is an act against you sister, aunt, lover, mother, girlfriend, friend.
We do not embrace the values he screams.
We are not moved in our hearts to feel admiration, only disgust.
We do not long to be in your beds, lust to be in your homes or quiver to be in your cars. We choose enlightened, sensitive and intelligent men, morally inclined towards fairness, equality and inclusiveness. We choose to be in the company of those who can see past the rhetoric and the simplistic ways, think for themselves — and listen to the hearts of those around them.
Every man on this Earth came from the body of a woman. To join in this dark false leader and support his ways is to turn against and betray us, abandoning and disrespecting us.
It is for this reason we march, it is for this reason we persist. It is for this reason we give — of ourselves and our resources, our thoughts and our prayers — that this time is for those not yet awake to become more aware and enlightened, to contemplate not pontificate, to create and help heal where others would destroy. This time is for the Sisterhood to grow and connect, to support and encourage, and to find others of like mind — so that we may join them in doing the same. It is only through the deeper understanding of the shared common values of respecting all life that we may begin to heal. It is only when we all are honored equally that we will feel a touch of peace — women, men, children and animals alike.
